What: Food Trip (Taipei Thai Restaurant)
Where: Mingsheng East Road
When: February 16, 2011

As my days in Taiwan near to ends, Yiyeh want me to partake in a “different” journey. One of the things we really enjoyed together is food. We’re always excited to try a new cuisine and have an enjoyable conversation in the table. Our taste buds are almost alike. He wanted me to remember the places and restaurants I like the most.

February 6, 2011:

We went to Thai Taipei Restaurant at Minsheng East Road downtown Taipei City. The ambience is very cozy. I love the simplicity yet elegant atmosphere inside the restaurant. The food that I like the most is their sticky fried rice. It’s heaven! The staffs were so cool and friendly too. The moment you entered, you will see the infectious smiles in their faces. They will guide you in the table and give you a hand in assisting Yiyeh. I welcomed it with so much pride and joy when the staffs accommodate us very well because Yiyeh is too old and fragile.

What: Food Trip (Shabu-Shabu)
Where: Fushing Street
When: February 22, 2010

The restaurant is not far from where we stay. The place is so simple but not quite big. What really mesmerized me to go back to this place is the mini library.

The waiter was there quickly to get our orders.

The quality of food was excellent. Very fresh and tasteful.

The food is cheaper than the above restaurant.

The waiting time was about what I've expected.

I’m worried a little bit because I’m trying to control my weight. I told him not to divulge too much in food. He told me I can diet anytime but the opportunity for us is limited so I have to enjoy his company. I guessed it was his way of showing of his appreciation towards me.

Dear God,

You crossed every border between divinity and humanity to make your home with us. Bless our fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters who have travelled to foreign lands with faith in their heart leaving their families behind as they break through the barriers of people, cultures, and languages to escape oppression and poverty.

There are many things going on that are beyond us even with our collective power. We come to thee in supplication and heartfelt pleadings as we are mindful of the ordeals of others.

We thank thee for hearing the prayers of your people as China grant reprieve to our three OFWs and may the Chinese government grant a lesser penalty to their case.

We pray for the thousands of OFWs who were incarcerated and imprisoned in the Middle East, Asia and other continents, may thou please grant them the chance to get back to their families and find a new life, justice and freedom as they entrust their lives into thy hands. May Thou enlighten our leaders to put the plights of distressed OFWs as a priority and withdraw from plans to cut the DFA social service and legal assistance funds.

We pray to Thee that our OFWs in Taiwan will soon be reprieved of taking all the heat of the current Taiwan-Philippines rift. May the government emissary would soon find resolution to this issue so that those more than five thousand scheduled for deployment will now be allowed to take on their jobs, and the nearly a hundred thousand currently employed may keep their jobs and be able to sustain their families.

We pray that may Thou please keep our overseas Filipinos safe in the escalating conflict in countries where democratic renaissance in Muslim nations is unfolding from Morocco, Egypt, Yemen, Bahrain and Libya as they await the immediate repatriation efforts being taken by our government agencies.

We pray for Thy protection and guidance of the more than thirty thousand OFW’s in Libya. May their families in the Philippines be freed from fear and worries of their condition and that the OFWs safety is assured despite the worsening condition.

We pray that may Thou save from harm our Filipino workers in war torn countries of Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as OFWs in Nigeria, Somalia, Lebanon and Jordan, who have taken great risks to continue their fight against poverty to support their families in the Philippines despite of the work deployment ban imposed in these countries.

We pray for the safety of the Filipino nurses trapped in the rubbles during the earthquake in New Zealand, and the rest of the OFWs and Expats around the world who are suffering from natural calamities, diseases and injustices that they may find comfort through faith in Thee.

Hear our prayer Lord, to end the corruption that has become the plague of our nation, to end poverty that afflicts and besets Thy people, to end violence and war that displaces millions of our
Filipinos from their homes, which separate, divide and break families.

As we await for the signs of time when the Filipinos around the world, the fathers and mothers brothers and sisters, and sons and daughters may be reunited as one happy family.

We pray for Thine tender love and kind mercy, with our faith, with our hope, with our love to thee, we pray for power greater than us all, we pray for divine intervention.

This is a joint call from the Pinoy Expats/OFW Blog Awards, or PEBA, Inc, along with its 300+ KABLOGS, the RMN News Bantay OFW radio program and the Blas Ople Policy Center and we are asking for your prayers or support by reposting this to your blog, posting this link in your FB, Friendster and Twitter accounts or sending this as email to your networks.

Sana...

What's Next for Taiwan and Philippine Row?

The escalating tension between Taiwan and Philippines was blown out of proportion. It’s a hot topic here, radios and television programs are riding on the magnitude of the effects and concerns of every Taiwanese. The February 2 incident in which the Philippine deportation of the 14 Taiwanese nationals caused angered and resentment and put OCW’s on the unbalanced state. We can’t do anything because it is a matter of state affair and the national interest for both sides. Taiwan demanded an apology from Manila and Philippines reiterated that APOLOGY is not needed because they followed the right procedures according to the law. They insisted the ONE CHINA POLICY. ( in that case, as far as I know when a country reason out the one china policy, everything seems acceptable)

Now what’s next? After, Chinese Authority suspended the execution of 3 Filipinos. ( we are very grateful and thankful for sparing their lives and for giving them a chance to review the case). But as a OFW in Taiwan, I have feared that the issue with us will remain unsolved. The focus will not on the benefit of common workers here. It was said the temporary freezing of Filipinos workers, the rules became so stiff that the 7 to 12 days of documents processing will become 4 months, they added requirements too that need money to produce and visa waiver privileges were under scrutiny. It’s a burden for those who are applying to work here and it’s a cross for every family that see hope working in Taiwan. If they can’t make an apology at least be sensitive in the issue. Soft answer to the question asked by media will do because every word uttered on air has a big impact on us. I just hope they watch and read the news with regards on it. The opposition party is using the sentiment of ordinary citizen to get the mandate of the people in the up-coming national election next year. So, what’s next?

Today, former Sen. Manuel Roxas will arrive in Taipei to patch up and ironed things out. I hope and I pray they will come up with the solution that benefits not only the government but the OFW as well. Five thousand Filipino workers and more are waiting because their working permit are temporary canceled. My heart goes with them, for I understand the burden of having a credit in lending institutions. The interest is very high. It’s not an easy job for Mr. Roxas. I’m wishing him goodluck!^_^

The visit will determine the fate of all OCW's. Council of Labor Affair will depend on the goodwill Mr. Roxas would say. But on the other hand Premier Wu Dyin-yeh said OFFERING AN APOLOGY IS A NECESSARY CONDITION ON HIS VISIT. NO APOLOGY MEANS LACK OF SINCERITY. OUR FIRM STANCE IS THAT THE PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENT MUST APOLOGIZE FOR WHT HAPPENED.

(2010 and 2011 Chinese Lantern Festival taken from Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Park)
with Marites

I went to Dr. Sun Yat-sen Park to watch the Chinese Lantern Festival. It wasn’t my planned, but Yiyeh mentioned about the occasion. I called Ate Melba but due to her work schedule she couldn’t joined me. I decided to have an adventure alone. While I was busy taking pictures someone called me, “ Gemma is that you?” I couldn’t remember her, I tried not to sound impolite but I really had no clue. Then, she embraced me so tight, (of course I was being irrational to think that the woman was crazy) Wait, “who are you?” Did I meet you before? Yes, I am Marites!” She talked too much, yet I couldn’t compose myself. Could you please tell me where did we met?

Life is really full of surprises. Who would think after 7 years I will encounter her in unexpected moment and place. I also never thought that she will feel very thankful towards my gesture because it is not unusual to me. For me it’s merely doing something that appropriate in her burden. We had a snack in Mc Do, we talked about our lives and we promised to have a communication even thru text.

On the way home, I realized that in our simple action means a world to others. For us it doesn’t matter but for others it's a matter of life and death. God really remind me to be compassionate not only to my friends but especially to stranger. Thank you Lord!

There are many different beliefs about the origin of the Lantern Festival, however, it is likely to have had something to do with celebrating and cultivating positive relationships between people, families, nature and the higher beings that were believed to be responsible for bringing or returning the light each year.

One legend tells us that it was a time to worship Taiyi, the God of Heaven in ancient times. The belief was that the God of Heaven controlled the destiny of the human world. He had sixteen dragons at his beck and call and he decided when to inflict drought, storms, famine or pestilence upon human beings. Beginning with Qinshihuang, the first emperor of China, after whom China is named, all the emperors ordered splendid ceremonies each year. The emperor would ask Taiyi to bring favorable weather and good health to him and his people.

Wudi of the Han Dynasty directed special attention to this event. In 104 BCE, he proclaimed it to be one of the most important celebrations and the ceremony would last throughout the night.

Another legend associates the Lantern Festival with Taoism. Tianguan is the Taoist god responsible for good fortune. His birthday falls on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. It is said that Tianguan likes all types of entertainment, so followers prepare various kinds of activities during which they pray for good fortune.

Another legend associates the Lantern Festival with an ancient warrior name Lan Moon, who led a rebellion against the tyranical king in ancient China. He was killed in the storming of the city and the successful rebels commemorated the festival in his name.

Yet another common legend dealing with the origins of the Lantern Festival speaks of a beautiful crane that flew down to earth from heaven. After it landed on earth it was hunted and killed by some villagers. This angered the Jade Emperor in Heaven because the crane was his favorite one. Therefore, he planned a storm of fire to destroy the village on the fifteenth lunar day. The Jade Emperor's daughter warned the inhabitants of her father’s plan to destroy their village. The village was in turmoil because nobody knew how they could escape their imminent destruction. However, a wise man from another village suggested that every family should hang red lanterns around their houses, set up bonfires on the streets, and explode firecrackers on the fourteenth, fifteenth, and sixteenth lunar days. This would give the village the appearance of being on fire to the Jade Emperor. On the fifteenth lunar day, troops sent down from heaven whose mission was to destroy the village saw that the village was already ablaze, and returned to heaven to report to the Jade Emperor. Satisfied, the Jade Emperor decided not to burn down the village. From that day on, people celebrate the anniversary on the fifteenth lunar day every year by carrying lanterns on the streets and exploding firecrackers and fireworks.

Another legend about the origins of Lantern Festival involves a maid named Yuan-Xiao. In the Han Dynasty, Mr. Eastern was a favorite adviser of the emperor. One winter day, he went to the garden and heard a little girl crying and getting ready to jump into a well to commit suicide. Mr. Eastern stopped her and asked why. She said she was Yuan-Xiao, a maid in the emperor's palace and that she never had a chance to see her family since she started working there. If she could not have the chance to show her filial piety in this life, she would rather die. Mr. Eastern promised to find a way to reunite her with her family. Mr. Eastern left the palace and set up a fortune-telling stall on the street. Due to his reputation, many people asked for their fortunes to be told but every one got the same prediction - a calamitous fire on the fifteenth lunar day. The rumor spread quickly.

Everyone was worried about the future and asked Mr. Eastern for help. Mr. Eastern said that on the thirteenth lunar day, the God of Fire would send a fairy in red riding a black horse to burn down the city. When people saw the fairy they should ask for her mercy. On that day, Yuan-Xiao pretended to be the red fairy. When people asked for her help, she said that she had a copy of a decree from the God of Fire that should be taken to the emperor. After she left, people went to the palace to show the emperor the decree which stated that the capital city would burn down on the fifteenth. The emperor asked Mr. Eastern for advice. Mr. Eastern said that the God of Fire liked to eat tangyuan (sweet dumplings). Yuan-Xiao should cook tangyuan on the fifteenth lunar day and the emperor should order every house to prepare tangyuan to worship the God of Fire at the same time. Also, every house in the city should hang red lantern and explode fire crackers. Lastly, everyone in the palace and people outside the city should carry their lanterns on the street to watch the lantern decorations and fireworks. The Jade Emperor would be deceived and everyone would avoid the disastrous fire.

The emperor happily followed the plan. Lanterns were everywhere in the capital city on the night of the fifteenth lunar day. People were walking on the street. Fire crackers kept making lots of noise. It looked like the entire city was on fire. Yuan-Xiao's parents went into the palace to watch the lantern decorations and were reunited with their daughter. The emperor decreed that people should do the same thing every year. Since Yuan-Xiao cooked the best tanyuan, people called the day Yuan

Sigaw ng Magdalena

nagagalak
natutuwa
nagpapatianod
naiingganyo

sa kislap ng ginto
ng ligayang natatamo

sumasayaw
umiindayog
gumigiling
inaakit

ng saliw ng gitarra
ng sariling orchestra

nalulusaw na ang pagtitimpi,
sa makasariling gustong maani,
sa sukdulan ng paghihiganti,
isang kaluluwa ang binibili.

pingas na respeto ang dinaing,
subalit itinatatwa ng hangarin,
salapi buong kinang, nagniningning,
gustong hawakan at maangkin.

mabulaklak na dila,
ang sandatang gumagayuma,
panloloko ang birada,
sa dilag na tanga.

ito na ang pagkakataon,
na maigupo ng tampalasan,
hayok na sa indayog ng katawan,
ng magdalenang di niya kilala.

susunggaban ang inilatag,
katumbas ng bayad ng isang aba,
nakakubli at natmamatyag sa gilid,
ang kaluluwang nagdurusa.

sumisigaw, ituloy mo na!
igapos sa sarili niyang pagnanasa.

I was in deep struggle, something is missing,
Searching for a light but just encountered nightmare,
Tired & weak giving up was my only answer,
Suddenly, out of nowhere u came.

Everyday I longs for someone who would care,
Someone that will ignite my hope and eager to share,
That will embrace me & do something fair,
Who will encourage and whatever the risk he would dare.

Before I go to bed, I've prayed for blessings,
Hoping my Angel will put an end to my suffering,
The time is running, my eyes weeping,
Doubts and boredom keeps arising.

My life is empty, it feels I'm nothing,
I live in utopia in day dreaming,
My desire to be love keeps me wondering,
If there someone for me? my hope is fading.

My sacrifices paid off, the courage I muster,
My dream come true, you are my Angel,
You are my best moment, my truest blessings,
You are my shield, the gift I am waiting.

February 8, 2011 Taiwan recalls envoy to Philippines.

February 9, 2011 Deportation row to affect Filipino workers

"“Starting today, we are implementing a stricter screening of applications for hiring new Filipino workers,” said Council of Labor Affairs Minister Wang Ju-hsuan.

She said it would now take four months to screen applications for importing Filipino workers, compared with the maximum of 12 days previously required"

"But Wang warned that if Manila fails to formally apologize for its mistake and does not take corrective action, the labor council will not rule out the possibility of imposing a formal freeze on bringing in Filipino workers or adopting even harsher sanctions"

"In addition to tightening the screening of Filipino workers, Taiwan has also decided to recall its envoy in Manila and cancel visa waiver privileges for some visitors from the Philippines to protest the Philippine government's handling of the issue."

Nakakainis dahil wala pa akong naririnig from the Philippine government.

Habang nabubuhay, iibigin, magsasama,
Kapit kamay bukang liwayway haharapin na may pag-asa.

Kalayaan binigay pati pagtitiwala,
Hinayaan maabot ang pangarap na malaya,
Kalinisan ng pagkatao saiyo ipinakita,
Upang pagharap sa unos 'di bara-bara.

Pag-ibig na pinalago, pinagyaman iyong dinispatsa,
Matibay na pundasyon ng moralidad, natibag , nasira,
Inisip mo'y sariling kaligayahan at pagpapahalaga,

Madalas sarili nagmumukmok muntik pang maloka,

Maitim at mabangong buhok samyu ng mahinhing kabanguhan,
Kakaibang magnetismo binuhay aking kamalayan.

Bituing kayrami makikita sa kalawakan,
Singdami ng buhangin sa dalampasigan,
Ibon lumabas sa kuwebang pinagtataguan,
Ika'y inaaliw, nililibang at inaawitan.

Masasalamin sa mukha payapang kalooban,
Mabangis na hayop, napapaamo sa mayuming kagandahan,
Tinig mo'y tumatagos, sumasagad sa kaibuturan,
Dinaing na kaligayahan ngayon ay natagpuan.

Ala maniking pisngi, sa labi may nakaguhit na saya,
Ngiting kayganda, dulot aliw at ligaya,

Buong galak sila pumupuri nag-aawitan.

Mahiwagang pinto gusto kong puntahan,
Ngunit 'di ako makalapit at kinakabahan,
Umihip ng hangin nanuot sa aking pakiramdam,
Ikaw pala'y Dyosa sa panaginip lamang.
